OIE Reference Laboratory for Avian and Ovine Chlamydiosis, National Reference Laboratory for Chlamydiosis

Psittacosis is a disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, an obligate intracellular bacterium. It occurs in birds and humans. As it is transmissible from animals to humans, it is a zoonotic disease. Furthermore, the National Reference Laboratory conducts research on other chlamydial diseases of animals.

Support of veterinary investigation agencies of the federal states, particularly with regard to diagnostics:

  • Clarification of unclear test results
  • Investigation of samples from suspected cases of psittacosis
  • Development and implementation of new laboratory diagnostic methods
  • Optimization of existing procedures for laboratory diagnostic methods
  • Supply of stock cultures and reference DNA for veterinary investigation agencies
  • Organization of ring trials
  • Scientific consulting
