October 4th 2011: Risk assessment on the introduction and spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus Subtype H5N1 (HPAIV H5N1) into poultry holdings of the Federal Republic of Germany
Since the last risk assessment (02/14/2011) outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza of subtype H5N1 (HPAI H5N1) have neither in Germany nor in other EU Member States or other European countries occurred. While HPAI H5N1 was already endemic in Africa and Asia in poultry populations of Egypt, Bangladesh, China (Hong Kong), Indonesia and Vietnam, new outbreaks both in poultry and in wild birds were notified in Cambodia, India, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar and the
Palestinian Autonomous Territories. New human infections were reported from Egypt, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Cambodia.
In summary, the risk for the introduction and spread of HPAI H5N1 into poultry flocks in Germany is assessed as follows:
Risk | |
---|---|
I. Introduction of HPAIV H5N1 into Germany through: | |
Illegal trade from Third countries | high |
Legal trade with Third countries or EU Member States | neglectable |
Introduction through passenger and vehicle traffic | low |
Wild birds | low |
II. Introduction of HPAIV H5N1 into poultry holdings through: | |
Passenger and vehicle traffic in Germany | negligible |
Wild birds | low |
