Development and clinical testing of a protective pan-Filovirus vaccine for epidemic rapid response - PanFiloVaxRR

The PanFiloVaxRR project aims to develop a portfolio of vaccine candidates against filoviruses, conduct a clinical proof-of-concept study (Phase 1/2a), and establish a pipeline of vaccine candidates for further development (Phases 2 and 3) as part of a rapid response to filovirus epidemics and pandemics. Our primary goal is to develop a single vaccine candidate that protects against infections with the most important ebolaviruses (Ebola virus, Sudan virus, and Bundibugyo virus), as well as Marburg virus. Furthermore, we aim to expand the current understanding of host-pathogen interactions for filoviruses and the role of vaccination in this context by focusing on the interaction of the cellular receptor NPC1 with the virus-strain-specific glycoprotein (GP), in vitro virus neutralization tests using live viruses and pseudoviruses on human cell lines, as well as virus challenge studies following vaccination in suitable animal models (FLI: guinea pigs, ferrets; partner site NML: non-human primates) under BSL-4 conditions.
