Research field Methods for assessing animal welfare

Time: 01.01.2024 – 31.12.2026

Project funding: Co-funded by the European Union

The aim of this project is to create a knowledge platform that enables the collection, compilation, analysis, dissemination and use of integrated scientific and technical data on animal welfare. This platform is intended to support future monitoring and control of animal welfare at EU level on farms, during transportation, and at slaughter. The project covers 14 animal categories from three production sectors (milk, eggs and meat) that are relevant for EU food production. The FLI is participating as a contributing institution in the area of pig husbandry (on-farm).

Project objectives:

  • Establishment of a network of relevant stakeholders
  • Identification, collection, compilation and analysis of indicators, methods, protocols, tools, and data for recording animal welfare
  • Development of a knowledge platform for the systematic collection and feedback of animal welfare data on farms, during transport, and slaughter
  • Identification and formulation of requirements for the standardization of animal welfare indicators and monitoring processes to be addressed in future activities of the partnership
  • Design of a flexible data model for recording animal welfare in the EU to support centralized and harmonized monitoring and control systems
