‘Making pig husbandry fit for animal welfare labels’: Integrated development of housing systems and process technology for the transformation of conventional housings


Common pig husbandry is optimized for profitability and achieving high hygienic standards, however not necessarily prioritizing animal welfare. Possible ways for attaining higher animal welfare standards in such facilities is to structure the pens into different functional areas and to offer the animals enhanced organic materials, for activity and manipulation. In existing housing systems, such transformations are a big challenge. The projects main aim is therefore to find realistic solutions fulfilling the prerequisites of animal welfare labels, while also considering profitability and high hygiene standards for piglet raising and pig fattening (‘Making pig husbandry fit for animal welfare labels’: Integrated development of housing systems and process technology for the transformation of conventional housings). The project is divided into separate sub-projects, each being supervised by a single project partner. 

Besides the Institute of Animal Welfare and Animal Husbandry of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut the project partners involved are the LSZ Boxberg (Bildungs- und Wissenszentrum Boxberg), University of Hohenheim, Deutscher Tierschutzbund e.V. and Vion GmbH. The project will run until 2020. 

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut’s objective is to develop and validate new organic materials for activity and manipulation, as well as potentially enhancing these by adding different odors and nutritive ingredients. The experiments will take place over a period of three years in the research facilities of LSZ Boxberg. All pigs in the trial will not undergo tail-docking. Using the German common tail and ear lesion scoring system, key changes in the tails are examined. Evaluation and analysis of the resulting datasets will be completed during the trials.
