The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) is one of the world’s leading research institutes in the field of animal diseases, animal welfare, animal husbandry, animal nutrition and farm animal genetics. It is part of the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity and advises the Federal Government in these areas.
It has state-of-the-art laboratories and experimental animal facilities, including for large animals in biosafety levels 2-4, as well as two insectaria (BSL-2/BSL-3). The Institute of Immunology at the Greifswald – Insel Riems headquarters is seeking to fill the following position
Research Scientist, Humoral Immunology (m/f/d)
to start as soon as possible on a full-time basis (currently 39 hours per week). The position is limited to four years.
Tasks:
The IfI investigates the immune response in various host species to animal diseases and zoonotic infections. The successful candidate will develop independent research projects with a focus on systems serology. This includes the establishment of a high-throughput pipeline for the analysis of humoral immune responses in livestock to highly relevant animal diseases and zoonoses, such as African swine fever or Influenza virus infections. Active collaboration with scientists at the IfI and across the FLI, as well as the acquisition of third-party funding and engagement in national and international scientific networks, are important tasks of this position and strongly encouraged.
Requirements:
- University degree in veterinary medicine, biology or related fields
- PhD in immunology, infection biology or related biosciences
- In-depth knowledge and experimental expertise in the field of infection biology, especially in the field of humoral immunity
Addition Qualifications:
- Laboratory skills in virology and molecular biology
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent scientific work, including supervising early career scientists
- Experience in combining experimental tools and bioinformatics to functionally analyze antibody repertoires and functions
- Experience with serology platforms in the context of infectious diseases
- Excellent communication skills in English
We expect an independent scientific way of working including scientific evaluation and presentation techniques, good administrative skills in project management, motivation and resilience as well as good work organization and the ability to work in a team. Good knowledge of the German language (official language) or the willingness to learn it within a reasonable period of time is a prerequisite for the successful fulfilment of the tasks.

Depending on the fulfilment of the requirements of the collective agreement, the payment will be graded up to pay group 14 TVöD, tariff area – East.
The job involves working in a biosecurity area, which requires a background check according to the Security Clearance Act (Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz, SÜG) and special protective measures against health hazards. Mental and physical suitability is therefore a prerequisite for filling the position.
