The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut is part of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and is one of the world's leading research institutes in the field of animal health. It informs and advises the Federal Government in this field. It has state-of-the-art laboratories and experimental animal facilities, including for large animals in protection levels 2-4 as well as insectaria in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 area.

The main site on the island of Riems is seeking candidates for the position of

Deputy Head of the Institute (m/f/d) in the Institute of Infectology

for appointment as soon as possible. The Institute of Infectology (IMED) currently has 10 research groups. Further information on the IMED can also be found at www.fli.de.

If the requirements under career law and other conditions are met, the status of a civil servant as Director and Professor in grade B1 of the Federal Salary Scale with unlimited tenure is intended. Alternatively, the position can be filled as an employee in civil service covered by a collective bargaining agreement with non-tariff pay in the amount of the remuneration according to salary group B1 (BBesO).

Tasks:

The Institute of Infectology is involved in diagnostics and research on infection-related diseases in the fields of "vectors" and "non-classical farm animals". Main research focus is on arthropods as vectors in the areas of monitoring, vector competence, pathogenesis, virus-vector-host interactions and risk assessment. Beneficial insects are to be included in these investigations in the future.

Diagnostics and research into infection-related diseases in aquaculture form a second focus. The National Reference Laboratories for bee diseases and different fish, mussel and crustacean diseases are assigned to the institute.

The future special focus on potential vectors will also be reflected in the expected management activities at IMED. The active support of collegial cooperation with the other specialized institutes of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) as well as participation in national and international committees is also an important task.

Requirements:

We are looking for a highly qualified scientist, especially in the field of veterinary medicine, biosciences or related sciences. The successful candidate should have years of experience in the field of infection research in arthropods as vectors or beneficial insects. The focus should be on diseases that are relevant in transmission to other animal species and/or as zoonosis.

In addition, we expect relevant experience in leading your own research group or department as well as proven qualifications through habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements. Experience with administrative tasks and strategic team development is required to fulfil the management tasks associated with this position.

Skills in team-orientated management of staff, excellent communication skills, in the acquisition of third-party funding, experience in working on national and international committees and very good German and English language skills are also required.

The job involves working in the security sector, which requires a check in accordance with the Security Inspection Act and special protective measures against health hazards. Personal and health suitability is therefore a prerequisite for the position.
