Research project “ErhEb” - Evaluation of the elevated platforms as useable space for fattening pigs using of digital monitoring methods

Animal friendly and sustainable husbandry behaviour and disorders

Project duration: 01.09.2023 - 31.12.2027

Funding Organisation: Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture

Elevated platforms in pig houses, can be reached by the animals via ramps, and are regarded farmers as a possibility to structure the pens and to offer the pigs additional space even in existing pens. However, in this context, the question arises for agricultural practice and the respective authorities to what extend the areas on the elevated platforms can be taken into account as unrestricted usable floor area or whether the elevated platforms are only representing additional areas for enrichment.

In this project, digital monitoring system for platform use and animal health measurement will be developed. Furthermore, the question to what extend elevated platforms are accessible to all fattening pigs will be answered.
